A few weeks ago, I asked my Instagram community:
“Do you know the difference between self-help, coaching, and therapy?”
The answers were thoughtful, some yes, some no, and a whole lot of “kind of.” But here’s what I really want to explore:
Do you know when you personally would benefit from self-help, coaching vs therapy?
Because understanding what they are is one thing.
Recognizing which one you need, right now, in the season you’re in, is something else entirely.
To help unpack this, I want to introduce you to Jordan. Jordan is fictional, but their journey might feel familiar.
Self-Help: When You Want to Figure It Out Alone
Jordan didn’t think they needed “help.” Not that kind of help, anyway.
Life wasn’t falling apart. But something felt off.
They weren’t sleeping well. The joy was missing.
Their mind felt like a browser with 37 tabs open, no sound, but something was definitely playing in the background.
So they did what most of us do when things feel off: they searched.
Books. Podcasts. Journals. Even ChatGPT at 2 a.m.
Little by little, they felt more human. Less alone. Like they were finally moving forward.
Self-help gave Jordan language, validation, and a sense of power.
But eventually, it wasn’t enough.
Self-help is the entry point for many of us.
It is how we begin to make sense of what we are feeling before we are ready to say it out loud.
Coaching: When You’re Ready to Take Action
Six months later, Jordan was doing better… but still stuck.
Work wasn’t fulfilling. They had ideas but no structure.
They didn’t need more insight, they needed direction.
That’s when Jordan connected with a life coach. Not someone to dig into the past, but someone to ask:
- What do you want to create?
- What’s holding you back?
- Let’s make a plan.
Coaching gave Jordan momentum.
They started setting goals. Showing up differently.
For a while, they were thriving.
Until the same emotional walls returned…
Coaching helps when you know where you want to go but need clarity and structure to get there.
It is not about the past, it is about forward motion.
Therapy: When You’re Ready to Go Deeper
Even with progress, Jordan kept getting stuck in familiar patterns:
- People-pleasing
- Avoiding conflict
- Feeling guilt for outgrowing old roles
This wasn’t a mindset issue. It was something deeper, something coaching and journaling couldn’t reach.
So Jordan tried therapy. Not because they were broken, but because they were ready to understand why.
Therapy gave Jordan space to grieve, reflect, and begin healing.
Therapy is about healing the parts of you that are too heavy to carry alone.
It helps you understand your patterns so you can shift them at the root.
Where Does ChatGPT Fit In?
There’s a lot of talk online about whether tools like ChatGPT are replacing therapy or coaching.
The short answer: they are not.
But they can be a helpful self-help tool.
Jordan still used it for questions like:
- What’s the difference between burnout and depression?
- Why do I feel guilty all the time?
It helped but it couldn’t hold space, reflect deeper emotional patterns, or guide them through healing.
It was still self-help, just more interactive.
Helpful? Yes. But it’s not therapy. Not coaching. Just one piece of the puzzle.
Maybe You’re Jordan Right Now
Not because your story is the same, but because your feelings are.
You’ve probably:
- Tried to figure things out on your own
- Hit a wall with self-help
- Wondered if you’re “too much”
- Craved support but didn’t know where to start
Let me say this clearly:
You’re not broken if you need therapy.
You’re not flaky if you try coaching.
You’re not wasting time if you start with self-help.
It’s not about picking the “right” one, it’s about choosing what you need in this moment.
Growth Isn’t Linear. It’s Layered
Jordan didn’t choose one path forever.
They circled back to self-help between therapy sessions.
They re-hired a coach when launching something new.
They used ChatGPT when they couldn’t sleep.
That’s real life. That’s how healing works.
What helps you today might not be what helps tomorrow and that’s okay.
So… What Do You Need Right Now?
Maybe it’s a book and a blank page.
Maybe it’s accountability and a plan.
Maybe it’s finally naming and processing what you’ve been carrying.
Maybe it’s all of the above.
Gentle Encouragement
Start where you are.
You’re not too sensitive. You’re not behind. You’re human.
Like Jordan, you might need different kinds of support at different points.
If therapy feels like the next step, I’d be honored to walk with you.
